When you can't agree on something

With the kids living on their own, my husband is the person I spend most of my time with. At times, we don't agree on something and I am the one always offering to compromise. Lately, he has started to listen to me more and offer solutions though as always, he never speaks much. I wish he would express himself and talk more; it is never easy to tell what he is thinking about at any particular point.

Sounds like he does not like confrontation?   They say happy marriages are 50/50 but I have never seen that.  Even in happy marriages I have seen one always gives in to the other.  The trouble is when it is to one sided, that it builds up over the years and can turn ugly.   I think you have a good marriage and will work thru this change in your life.

It's the opposite with us. My husband is chatty and opinionated, so at some point I have to get a word in or else he thinks I'm agreeing with him!

Why is it that understanding each other becomes less when couples become married? Just a thought, how about you do a toss coin when you can't agree on something?


On a serious note, the only way for a person to compromise is to have humility, which is hard to find in today's society.

Over the years, I have come to agree with the phrase "unlike poles attract" because unlike him, I'm more talkative and expressive. Yes MaryB, he detests confrontations and prefers to solve things 'diplomatically' but you and I also know that such people can be stubborn at times.
