Hairball medicine recommendations

As a cat owner, I know I have to do my part by regularly grooming my cats to remove the dead hair and prevent hairballs. I'm responsible about that.  However, I have one long haired cat that still gets hairballs from time to time.  Our regular brand changed their hairball formula and  it doesn't seem to work anymore for her.  What brand do you all use?  How does the hairball stuff work exactly?  I figured it just coats the hair so it will slide down their digestive track.
