Title: Went back to college... now in same one as child. Anyone else experience this?
Post by: haidyl on October 14, 2018, 02:44:50 AM
I know it sounds weird but we actually ended up in the same class with my daughter. I wasn't for the idea from the start but she kept encouraging me to enroll, even going ahead to suggest that she wouldn't mind sharing classes. What started as a joke led to me getting an admission letter. My daughter loves the idea but I am afraid that it could limit her interaction and freedom to mingle with the rest of her age mates.

Has anyone ever been in such a situation before? Was it always a smooth ride? No one in the class has any idea that we are related and I prefer to keep things this way. All the same, nothing is ever kept secret forever. Any tips and suggestions?

Wow, that would be an awkward situation. Does your daughter have the same feeling? Does she want to keep your relationship a secret? I think it's great that she encouraged you to go back to school. It shows that she really believes in you!

I understand your concerns. You don't want to interfere with her peer interactions. Even if people end up finding out you're related, she'll have plenty of time outside the classroom to interact with her peers, so it may not be a bad thing if people find out. Talk to her and see how she feels. She might be proud that you're in her class. :)

We spoke at length this evening and the amazing thing is that we seemed to find common ground on a lot of things. My worry isn't so much about her classmates finding out that I am the mother (since we really look alike) but about her peer interactions suffering as a result. I agree that there will be plenty of time outside the classroom, so I don't have to fret so much about everything else. We seem to both be having fun so far; I just hope she doesn't beat me in all the exams because she is a brilliant kid!

That is a very interesting situation indeed. I couldn't imagine but I am sure it makes for some fun situations. I am glad to read that you and your daughter had a good talk about it. I would definitely express my concerns to her and let her ease your mind. I am sure it isn't that bad! I am just interested if there are people you click with in the school?

Ooh yes, it is quite an interesting situation to find oneself in especially because a year or so ago, none of this was anywhere near my imagination. I tend to be poor with new interactions but we just got into a discussion group and everyone in there seems really friendly. We are having fun indeed!
