Title: Culture Differences
Post by: MerryMe on December 06, 2018, 09:44:29 AM
Our parents lived in a different age and time. Most of us grew up when our technology was becoming really advanced. Many of our parents still don't know how to use our technology today like to participate in social media or to use the smartphones, to say the least. Do we help them adapt to our modern culture or do we have to accept their old way of thinking and doing things?

My mom's not interested in social media, but I think it's because many of her friends her age don't use it. However, she likes her smartphone — because many of these same friends have one!

I think this is the key to this problem. Our older parents become interested in the technology right now if their friends in their generation are using it as well. There is no point in helping them adapt to our culture if they won't use it for whatever reason.

Thanks for your thoughts as it gives me a different perspective. I agree with both of you because they don't need to keep up with technology in order to enjoy their lives. I guess it is our generation who can't continue living without the gadgets that we are using.

I don't think you should push your parents into learning this if they have no use for it. When they pick up a phone, they use it as such and if that's good enough for them it's good enough for me.

I dont think we can expect them to learn this mess, when every time it updates we are confused..  I dont think technology is fair to them at all.  I remember discussing this with a company once that it isnt fair that they charge us extra for paper bills..  not everyone uses or understands a computer.  I said what about the elderly that do not even have a computer and they answered me then they have a child or friend that does that could help them.  To me that is totally unfair..
