Awkward Date Night
« on: September 18, 2019, 07:24:13 AM »
My husband and I went out on our first date night since both of our kids are at college. It was awkward. At dinner, we used to talk about the kids, what they had going on, etc. Now, it's like we don't know what to say to one another. Does this get any easier?

You can talk about work, politics, conversations you've had with others, news stories, health (just a few suggestions), and you can talk about all your memories over the years of raising the kids.  Also, it's ok if there are periods of silence too (sometimes it's even nice).

It seems that it is easier when we talk about things that we have in common. My husband isn't a big talker, only when we talk about things that interest him a lot. Otherwise he isn't good with feedback. Maybe find topics that you both understand and are passionate about?

My husband doesn't talk a whole lot unless you talk about something that really interests him. I think I'll just have to ask him some more direct questions to get us started. Once he gets started, he can be hard to shut up. Haha!

He doesn't say much and will only speak when something interests him. On date nights, we don't talk much since we both prefer to have a meal and drink while listening to some music in the background. Interestingly, there will be much more to talk about on our way home.

Ava, that's kind of funny. It is good that you two are comfortable being with each other in silence, though. I guess I am so used to there being noise in the house and when we go out that I am finding the silence uncomfortable right now. I find myself feeling the need to fill the silence.

Isn't it interesting that one is always the quiet one whereas the other never seems to shut up?  I don't mean to say that we won't be saying anything during the date; at times it is very therapeutic to get immersed in the ambience and quiet, coupled with some soft music in the background.
