Unsolicited Advice
« on: May 20, 2019, 07:07:10 AM »
A couple of days ago, I was talking to a close friend about a situation that upset me at work. I just wanted her to listen, but she launches into giving me all kinds of advice about what I could do next time. I know she means well. She's a very dear friend, so I didn't say anything about it. I just hate when others launch into giving advice if I didn't ask for it. Maybe next time I'll just have to say I want to vent so she knows what I need.

Oh yea we learn real quick who we can and cant vent to.   I'm with you, sometimes just venting helps!   :coffee2:

It took me time to realize that it helps to be good listener. People open up to us because they want an audience and not to necessary solicit for advice. It is logical and respectful to only suggest a way forward when someone has asked for it.

I would say that I fall into that mistake sometimes. It is always easy to express our opinions about the things we will do if we are in the situation of our friend. I have to learn to use my ears first before using my lips to say the things I would like to say.

I hear you! I hate when you're trying to get something off your chest and the other person, instead of being supportive, is launching into all these different ways you could have solved the problem. It almost makes it seem like they're blaming you for the thing you're venting about. I could punch someone in the nose for doing that.
