Taking up a new challenge
« on: May 17, 2019, 02:58:07 AM »
I remember hearing some talk about taking up a new challenge as one of the ways of coping up with the empty nest syndrome and at first, I didn't understand this. Did you immediately find a bigger challenge that enabled you to redirect your focus? What do you think of the suggestion of not making any life-altering decisions in the first six months or so of your child moving out?

I focused on redecorating our home and my own work. It was a challenge, but nothing too big or serious enough to cause harm if the decisions aren't right. Even if that was the case, I don't think I would have made big mistakes, but everyone knows best how they are feeling and if they can take on something or not. If one feels too shaken up, they shouldn't risk until they get more stable.

I mainly tried to distract myself in the first several months since my daughter left for college. I found a part-time job to help me feel like I have a purpose again. My husband and I discovered we needed to work on our marriage, so we've been going to counselling.

I think it's wise to not make any big life decisions for several months after your child leaves home, if possible. I know I am still pretty emotional and not in a good space to make huge decisions.

Hey ladies, I am glad that you found a new challenge and redirected your energies towards something that helped you find a purpose. I think that it helps to take a while before making a decision that will require your commitment in the long term. Waiting also helps us make rational decisions.
