Becoming "invisible" with age
« on: January 11, 2019, 10:31:15 AM »
I've seen a few articles about women noticing that they feel more ignored or "invisible" once they hit age 40-ish. Retail and service employees seem to not notice them as much as younger customers (but that might be because a lot of these employees skew younger). What do you think?

I think society as a whole only values women who are young, thin, and beautiful.  According to that standard, a woman's value declines as she ages.  Men, of course, don't suffer from those same ridiculous social constraints.

I think this has been happening to me more often since entering my forties. It's apparent when I'm with a group of women of different ages and we go out. It feels kind of sad when I'm with a group where I'm the oldest! I also agree that society values youth, more so for women.

Yep, I agree with everything you all said here.  Seems no matter how old the man, they want a young girl.  And the young people seem to think we are dumb and overlook us like we dont count.  Now that sounds so negative, but that's my opinion.  Even my 70 year old husband likes 20 year olds..   I know because I clean his computer.  Disgusting

Young people have the misconception that they know it all but they then come seeking advice from their elders when things go awry. I'm a bit odd in the sense that aging never bothered me. I just accepted it for what it was. My hair turning grey, wrinkles appearing on my face, body parts going a bit "south" - none of those things bothered me. It drives some of my friends crazy because they can't fathom that I don't yearn to be 20 years old again. Anyway, try not to let it get to you. If someone is overlooking you because of your age they probably aren't worth speaking to in the first place.
