The relationship with your children
« on: December 15, 2018, 09:37:46 PM »
Did you notice any change in the way you used to relate with your children? It didn't take much effort to realize that the relationship with my kids started being peer-like and the challenge was in adjusting to the new role of being a 'peer-parent'. Luckily for us, we did not resist this change at all.

I remind myself that they'll figure out problems on their own and to give ideas or advice only if they ask. However, sometimes I forget!

Sometimes I forget too and it helps to always remember that when kids grow and move out, they appreciate it when we let them make major decisions on their own. Nonetheless, there should never be an end to a parent guiding their children.

Yes, of course there is a change, but it's a good change. Yes, I still do worry about them (too much at times), but at the end of the day I know they have a good head on their shoulders and I trust their judgment. I no longer give them orders or oversee their daily lives, but I take pleasure in the fact they choose to share their lives with me when they have the time. It has been a hard adjustment and I don't think I always saw it as a "good" change, but as more time goes by, the more I'm feeling at peace with my life changing.
