Relieving pain by downsizing

Your home could easily look like a museum, once the children are out, living on their own. I once heard someone claim that by downsizing, some empty nesters are able to let go of the pain of empty nesting. I would rather stay put and work through the pain of not having the kids around.

We recently moved, and I've been making a donation pile of our grown kids' old books and clothes. It helps with the empty nest pain, but not completely.

I just went through a cleaning spree where I cleaned our garage, attic, and closets. I donated a bunch of stuff we don't use anymore but that someone else could get some use out of. It was good to declutter a little, but I'm not sure it really helped ease my pain or loneliness.

To be honest, I've been putting that process off for a while. When my daughter moved out, she took almost everything in her bedroom with her, and we put the rest into our garage and attic, but we haven't sorted it yet. Her former bedroom is now my mom's bedroom. It looks so much nicer being lived in again.

Downsizing will also downsize the pain we have after the kids have gone to live their own lives. As the Christmas season is approaching, I remember the time when my kids will sort out clothes, toys, and stuffs that they wanted to share. This is how we downsize every year. Now, I have to do it on my own.
