Determining Bad or Good Principles
« on: October 31, 2018, 04:09:38 AM »
This is a touchy subject so I hope we remain discreet in our opinions.

What is our basis for determining what is a good or bad principle? I'm a Christian so I follow the Bible as my guide. There are some principles in the Bible that don't agree with liberal principles.

That's a tough question. As we grow up, we develop our own minds and logic. Our principles change according to our new experiences. (Religion is one of those.) Whether it's good or bad depends on the circumstances, but I can try to understand as long as it doesn't alienate the children from the society or cross the limit of common sense.

Growing up Christian, I felt like some of it really, really went against what is human and moral in my opinion. It feels wrong to judge people on who they are. I know we all want to feel like how we think and feel is the right way, but that's simply not the case. I think when you meet people of different backgrounds, you learn firsthand what it's like to be a good person because you're forced to love everyone for who they are, not for what color, sexual preference, social status, religion they have. That, to me, is what good principles are - acting from your heart, not from a book.

I totally agree with you. We don't have to stick to a principle that doesn't apply in our age. "An eye for an eye", for example, can be changed into "help everyone in need, even our enemies." (I'm thinking of Desmond Doss)

For me, I know it is wrong to judge others based on my principles because I will be biased. We have to see everyone as human beings first rather than conservative/liberal, religious/secular, Christian/Muslim, white/black, small/big, old/young, and so on.
