Celebrating your birthday
« on: October 15, 2018, 09:20:16 AM »
Now that my children have left (about 5 years ago is when my daughter moved away) I don't have a lot of family left around here and it has an effect on special holidays. We do come together on Christmas usually and for Thanksgiving when we can but birthdays are hard. I feel like I used to not care about my birthday, but the older I get, the sadder I am knowing that I will probably celebrate it by myself. Anyone else have that problem?

Everyone needs friends.  We are social creatures and do not want to be alone.  Even people that say they do usually keep a radio or tv on for the 'company'.  I hope you can celebrate your Birthday with at least one friend.   :big hug smiley sign:

I can definitely relate. I feel like if I don't plan something specific for my birthday, it will just go forgotten, and I'll be left to celebrate it alone. I usually try to make plans with a friend or two in advance so that I know I won't be alone. I truly hope that you have a good friend who will celebrate with you - you deserve to have a great celebration!

I do have some friends, usually 2 will come over but usually it'll be on another day, so on my birthday itself I am alone. It's weird how things change so much. Maybe I kind of set myself up as well because I never made a big deal out of it, so throwing a party isn't in my nature.

Have you ever tried doing something different for your birthday, like celebrating with friends instead of family or doing volunteer work instead of throwing a party? Usually, I have things to do on my birthday, so I end up not doing anything special. It may be different once I get old, but I try not to think about it too much now.

I understand what you are saying Ellie. Friends are not the same as family, however close they may be to us.

I trained my child that a birthday is not only a celebration of birth but of life. We reminded them that we were given life to share it with others. So we share food with the homeless every time someone has a birthday in our home.

My husband and I will continue doing that even when the kids have left already.
