When your kids understand what you are going through
« on: August 03, 2018, 03:00:00 AM »
When our first born left home for college, he was excited and ready to face the challenges that come with some independence. Little did we know that at the back of his mind, he seemed to understand the kind of effect his absence would have on all of us, including his younger siblings. This helped because communication was more frequent and he would visit frequently. His siblings missed him a lot and they would always look forward to visiting and/or seeing him. It wasn't so bad after all!

You are blessed to have a son like him. I guess this attitude of our children will appear when we have a close relationship with our children. If not, then they tend to be free from us as soon as possible.
For us, I'm glad that my son contacts us every weekend.

That's true MerryMe, having a close relationship with our children helps a great deal but again, this depends on them, since they all have different personalities. When they understand what we could be going through, then it becomes much easier to go through that phase.

That's so sweet that your oldest realized the effect his absence could have not just on you and your spouse but on his siblings as well. That shows a lot of emotional maturity. My kids were never that thoughtful!

I think the dynamics of parenthood keep changing over time, and the kids of today seem to know more than what a kid their age would probably understand, back in the day. Children like your eldest son are unique, few and far between and it is good to really appreciate them.

Sometimes, parents are the ones who create the distance between the children and them. We talk to our children when we either command them or scold them because they did not obey our command. We forget to appreciate them after doing what we told them to do.
