My dog is very clingy
« on: July 24, 2018, 04:40:51 PM »
We got a dog this weekend! A beautiful 1-year-old who sticks to me like cellophane. She was neglected by her previous owner, so I imagine it has something to do with that. I'm fine with it as long as it's helping her adjust. I feel like allowing it might be doing more harm than good though. She's very timid too.

Is there something I should be doing to help her with the adjustment and teach her to be more independent? I know that dogs are social and want to follow you around, but she will wake up from a dead sleep if I take a step and immediately get up. Does anyone have any advice?

I am very anxious to see if anyone has any suggestions.  My little rescue is the same way and she goes berserk when I step outside the door.  Now this makes my other little dog nervous too.  I have tried all I know and although she has came such a long way, still has separation issues.   You and I understand why they are like that (the abuse and abandonment) but what are we to do about it?  They arent happy like that and it's darn hard to make the bed when if I turn around to fast I trip over her!

I've had a dog like this before and it's something that usually gets better with time. However, there are certain things you can do to help the process. One thing I found really helpful was using baby gates. It creates a physical boundary but they can still see you. Additionally, some breeds are just more clingy than others. If you have one of those breeds, you should look around for tips for that specific breed.

Dogs are very intelligent animals and I believe it is doing so because of the experience from the previous owner. The newly-found care that she is experiencing is in contrast to the neglect she got used to. I would suggest that you do not hesitate to discipline it whenever necessary, and soon it will stop being clingy.

MaryB, I'm sure it's even more difficult for you because it's affecting your other dog. Poor things. Oh gosh, I can't tell you how many times I've almost tripped over my dog too! I totally understand why they are like this, but it's very challenging sometimes. I feel bad for getting frustrated about it too. It's just a whirlwind of emotions. How long have you had your rescue?

Henley, thanks for the advice. Baby gates are a great idea! I'll have to give that a try.

girlchild34, I agree. Her behavior is influenced by her previous owners which breaks my heart. I guess I'm just not sure how to discipline it for being clingy. I don't know if she would know what she's being disciplined for.

Hi Sam (Bewitched, get it.. lol)
We have  had Mimi a few years now and she has came a long long loooooong way but that insecurity may never get out of her completely.  She was  a puppy mill mommy that never seen the outside of a cage.  Just kept to have babies.  She has soaked up the love but is scared to death of being left still.  She was a wreck though, so like I said she has really came leaps and bounds.

Haha, I love it!

Oh, poor Mimi! Those puppy mills break my heart for so many reasons. That poor momma. I'm so glad that you have been able to provide a loving home for her and help her out. She needed it! Maybe this is one of those things that will always stick with her to some extent. I can't blame her for that. I'm sure she has doggie PTSD from that trauma. How old was she when you got her?
