Intrusive acquaintances
« on: February 13, 2018, 02:13:07 PM »
There's someone who recently moved into the neighborhood and we happened to meet and get to know to other, while shopping. From then on, she has been pestering me with all sorts of questions. I already have a feeling that she isn't the type to have as a close friend. How do I politely ask her to 'keep off?'

I'm guessing her questions focus on your private life and she's behaving like a busy body which naturally makes you uncomfortable.  Can you turn the conversation around so the focus is back on the neighbor?  You could respond with something like, "Oh, we're always talking about me which means I never have the chance to learn more about you.  Tell me about ___."  If the neighbor continues to pester you about your private life try replying with "why do you ask," which might give her a moment to reconsider her behavior.

She is obviously a needy person.  I don't like needy people.  My rule of thumb is be nice, be polite, be gone.  Maybe you could get her involved in some local clubs or activities so she can make other friends or acquaintances.  Good luck.

I once came across such a person. It didn't take long for her to realize that she wasn't welcome to my space. I am the kind of person that will ask anyone to back off if I feel uncomfortable. You may have to be forthright (at some point) if she doesn't get the hint.
