College kids and the part-time empty nest
« on: February 09, 2018, 04:01:43 PM »
I'm happy with my empty nest and I'm happy that my college aged son spends his breaks here.  Yet, every time he leaves, it's like ripping the band-aid off all over again!  Smaller breaks are okay.  He'll be coming here for spring break and I'll enjoy it without getting overly attached.  Summer break is a whole different story though.  Is anyone else in my boat?  How do you enjoy the extended visits without getting too used to seeing the person everyday?

By the way, my husband doesn't get it at all.

Men never do "get it."  When my daughter was in school it was the same way.  Being a single mom made it even worse.  I just tried to tell myself that this was temporary and enjoy the time I did have with her.

I think we all struggle with the attachment and others never get over it. I agree with the assertion that men generally never "get it". The harsh reality is that our kids grow each day and the sooner we appreciate this, the better for us in the long run.

Oh, I totally understand that feeling! The short visits are easier because I know they'll be leaving soon and it's a "special" time. When my kids are home for a long time, they become part of my daily routine, you know? I try to remind myself it isn't forever, but I never seem to listen to myself.
