Alone at Christmas

If there is anyone else who is alone this Christmas, how do you get over the overwhelming loneliness during this time? How do you cope when the kids aren't around for the holidays?

This has been the worst time I've had in a long time missing my grandchildren.  I haven't seen 2 in several years due to an ugly divorce.  I haven't seen 4 in several years due to my sons death and his wife remarried.  I just makes me sad.  I try to dwell on the 3 that I do get to see and spoil them rotten.  The other is a teenager and I get to see her occasionally.  It's over as of today and I'm glad.  Rotten attitude isn't it?

Blaire, in my town there is a group for singles that meet up on Christmas.  Do you have a similar option where you live?  If not, could you start one next year?  If your loved ones live far away, can you try something like rabbit to connect with them? I've been alone during the holiday season and it was the pits.  Thankfully, a friend invited me to stay with her family on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.  It was incredibly selfless of them and I will never forget that kindness.  If someone invites you into their home, I say go.  I've had people over as well during special times and it makes the memories that much richer.

I think it usually involves eating a potluck dinner, playing board games, and watching movies.  I think they exchanged an ornament or something similar to keep it affordable.  You can go even if you don't bring a dish. They have an event for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Valentine's Day, and Easter.   It's pretty popular.  There are a lot of folks who are alone during holidays - widows, widowers, divorced people, college kids who live far from home, truckers, soldiers, travelers, and the like.  Not all families stay close to one another and some people feel like it would be an imposition to join a friend's family (I love guests myself).
