My husband and I are trying to find the perks of our empty nest life and we're going to get out of the country and see something amazing! (That's the plan at least.) What cities/countries come to mind when you think of a romantic place with lots of tourist attractions - or even just one really big one? We've only had one international travel experience so far and that was to Paris, so excluding that one.

Paris was going to be my answer, Treasure.  What about Venice, Italy?  You can snuggle while floating on the canals.  There's tons of stuff to do in Venice and the food is amazing.

It's the first city that comes to most people's mind when they think of a romantic city, isn't it? It's always the first to pop into my head at least. Now I don't know how I didn't think of Venice! That's a great suggestion. Gondola rides, history and Italian food (and wine) - how could you complain? Have you been?

how about COSTA RICA(NovtoMarch is best)?  you will enjoy the group tours:  hiking in the rainforest(wet and dry), Catamarand, snorkelling, evening entertainment, casino. the last evening before our flight the next day i booked a couples massage which dh suggested we "continue this activity as a routine when we get home";  we stayed at the Riu Guanacaste resort- do not bother booking at the Riu Palace which is laid back- people go next door for all the activities and entertainment. This was our first vacation in 19 years so we explored all the tourist activities, allowing for  some "downdays" in between.

When dh was on his peacekeeping leave we, with our then 2 y.o., stayed at another all-incl resort in the DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, enjoyed many tours so when (and "i " KNOW  we will lol)go to the Dominican (DR) again it will be for the purpose of really relaxing.

Since we have been bitten by the travel bug we plan on escaping the harsh Canadian winter in the same time frame(Jan-Feb) every year;  in about 2 months we will be leaving for CUBA and staying at another all-incl resort(Men :dunno: ).  Next may be the hot and beautiful environment of Arizona.
When dh retires, as early as next summer, we plan to visit SCOTLAND (his roots)

Maybe you can explore Sandals(couples only) website for travel packages

ECUADOR is also becoming a common(and low-cost) vacation country for tourists;  people are actually "packing up and moving"  there to settle in their empty nest years

Mom56, those are some really great and detailed suggestions, thank you so much! You really know how to sell a place! Now I want to go to all of them. Costa Rica sounds like just the right fit - loads to do but allows for downtime as well. Although it sounds like most of the places you've listed would fit that well. I love that you all will be escaping the cold every winter - I can only imagine how cold it gets up there. That's such a nice idea.

Escaping the winter is something I've never actually thought about until now. It does sound like a really great idea, well worth looking into for the rest of us! Thanks for all the interesting suggestions.

Treasure:  have you left yet?- i'm waiting for a postcard lol; seriously have you decided?;  at Christmastime we learned that dh' eldest  sis& her hubby were booked at the same resort and timeframe(a 5 day overlap) in Cuba so we socialized with them a bit after ding our own things during the day:  only 2 tours-  a walking tour through  Havana which included a rum& cigar place and a crocodile farm(in  their natural habitat)- i got to enjoy holding a baby crocodile in the palm of my hand;  if you do choose Cuba please take trinkets - we take for granted necessities like toilet paper(outside washrooms there was always an old woman selling squares of tp, to earn money), nail polish, razors, dental products- they ,the maids, were SO VERY appreciative;  evidently working in the tourism business pays more than practising as a doctor or teacher

What a great idea. It's made me think that Mike and I need to do something like this. The first city that came to mind for me was Paris (France). It's supposed to be a romantic city.

If in the US I'd choose New Orleans, I don't know whether it has a reputation for being romantic, but I've always wanted to go there.
