Starting preparations early
« on: September 25, 2017, 12:29:36 AM »

I will be lying to say that I didn't feel a great sense of loss, when our last child left for college. Nonetheless, it didn't take so long to get over it because I started getting prepared psychologically, say a year before our daughter left home.

I read somewhere that these preparations  actually need to start early. Would you send your 9-year old for week long vacations? Would you let them spend up to a month with their grandparents?

My girls didn't get any lengthy experiences away from home, like you mention, but they did short stays with friends or my parents in the summer. If they'd had opportunities to go to camp and wanted to, I would have let them. I think it's good for kids to get out into the world and have to make some decisions for themselves, even if they're small in scale.

When they were younger and still living with me, I never sent my kids off for long periods of time and I don't regret. Why give up the precious time you have with them just to keep from feeling a lot of pain in the future?

I wouldn't have sent mine at 9 for a week away. That would have been too long, and not necessarily for us. She was stuck to mommy's hip.

I would say that as much as I did not send them for week long vacations, I had no option during the school holidays. My parents would drop by and pick them without notice, and they would be gone for two weeks. I think this helped to make them very close and to date, my kids always spare time to go and see them.

My daughter never spent great deals of time away from me except with her father.  I never had any misgivings about that.  He took her to visit his parents for a stay and she really enjoyed it.  She did spend the night with a couple of friends but that is it.

I wouldn't have any regrets if we didn't send my kids for these vacations; in most instances we had no choice since the extended family is quite close. Luckily, they come visiting every so often so we've remained close-knit over the years.
