Cataracts and Canines?
« on: December 29, 2016, 07:10:25 AM »
I woke up to my little pet, Mia, blinded in one eye.  I cannot tell you what a shock it was.  Made an appointment with her doctor here and ran to the Internet.  Read that diabetes can do that.  Now cats do not get effected the same way but it can suddenly do that to dogs..  so the worry worry worry...  still worrying!   So the doctor tests said no diabetes, but he was real careful not to be pinned down to a cause or diagnosis..  he referred us to a doggy ophthalmologist.  The nearest one here is 3 hours away.  Please pray for my little Mia.  She is my timid baby and afraid of her own shadow so to go thru this will be extra traumatic to her.   She is a Bichon so should have a nice long life, and is only 8 now, so it's not old age.  I guess she'd be middle aged.
Has anyone experienced cataract surgery with their pet?  Her appointment is Jan 10th so we'll know more then.

Hi Maryb...so sorry to hear about your little doggie. Do things like that happen just over night? I haven't had any experience with this but just wanted to let you know that I'll be thinking of you and hoping for the best. I know it will be hard on you too but hopefully it will all come out ok. I'm sure she will be a trooper and get though it all ok. Please keep us posted on how it goes.

Thank you so much for your kind words Elizabeth.   I never new of blindness coming on quickly either till this happened to my girl, but then I read a lot about it and it is well known for canines with diabetes.  It does not do it to cats though.  Here is just one of what I read:

Diabetes is a primary cause of cataracts in dogs. In fact, 75 percent of diabetic dogs will developblindness from cataracts within a year of diagnosis.Diabetic cataracts occur very quickly – sometimes literally overnight. Your dog goes to bed with normal eyes, and in the morning his eyes are white.Jan 10, 2012

I hadn't seen an update for a while, so I just wanted to ask how Mia's doing? I hope she's doing well, and the vet has managed to provide treatment or at least management for her condition.

We had a rescue cat with a sight issue, and made sure that the furniture was always in the same place, and the floors were kept clear. Once he learned where everything was and that it wasn't going to move, he was able to function much like a normal cat and really enjoyed life.

Thank you, Lyndish, for thinking of Mia.  She went blind so quick it scared her, and I did everything like you to make the house safe, but what I didnt  foresee is the outside dangers.  She poked a hole in her eye, and it's deep. Had to have happened around the bottom of the bushes where twigs stick out! We didnt know what happened since she didnt open it for 3 days,so we were treating it with the meds the ophthalmologist gave her for the cataract and salt water rinses, since I called him as soon as we seen the eye discharge and her not opening it, thought it was an infection!  The ophthalmologist is a couple of hours away so he finallly (after that treatment did not help her), said to take her to her local vet, where he opened her eye and seen the hole immediately.  I about fell over.. my poor baby!  So she now has 7 drops a day and I do believe it is helping since she opens her eye now and it is not so blood red, but she goes to see her eye doctor tomorrow and I will get questions answered.  Her vet said since it was such a bad puncture that it may not help, and if it did (the meds) that it would take a long time.  He said there may be a problem with scarring so lots of questions for the eye doctor.  I guess since it happened quick for her she will have to learn the distance of things, since the loss of one eye makes dept perception off.
Did your kitty go blind in both eyes, and did you know what caused it?

Oh dear! I hope Mia has some good news today, she's having a rough time of it and so are you! Take some time to look after yourself, or just cuddle Mia if she's a cuddler. All the best for the vet.

Ours was a elderly rescue cat, with little known background. We got him home, opened the carrier, and he walked straight out and into a doorframe. Our vet said he had extremely limited vision, probably caused by an eye infection as a kitten. It wasn't repairable but by now it was what he was used to so he wasn't suffering. He had to use eyedrops but once he had settled in he was a very happy cat for several years. (I still miss him. Old age gets us all eventually.)

oh my gosh, today was brutal.  That doc put her thru so much, then put that collar around her neck and that was the final blow, her eye balls about popped out she went into over ride panic mode!!!  It took her a good hour on the way home to calm down.  She was more than upset with me.  That doc put things in her eye..  touched her eyes multiple times and all that drops and all.. oh my!!!  over 250 bucks later he said she is still not out of danger of losing the eye but it is healng, and the red veins that came out are like the body saying emergency, get extra blood flow to the wound to heal it!!!   So that is a good thing, but it is a bad puncture..  and he gave us MORE drops!!!!  He said it will take a long time to heal this kind of wound, but please keep praying. :grouphugsign:

Sorry to hear your update, and poor Mia.  Hugs to both of you, and very gentle ones to Mia.

Is the collar one of those plastic cone things? They really don't like those, do they? Ours would never keep it on, and it drove us mad! Everytime we turned around, the collar was off and he was trying to lick the stitches he shouldn't.

Thank you Lyndish.. hugs back!
Yes, plastic cone!  She is not wearing it because she is not touching her eye.  It REALLY made her flip out so it seemed to make things worse. She is so timid of everything as it is.

Oh Maryb, so sorry to hear about your precious Mia. Hopefully she will keep getting better over time. And I don't blame you for taking the cone thing off. If she gets really upset wearing it I don't believe it will help her get better sooner. Keep us posted!

Thank you Bev!!!   :cute group hug:    I do believe she is getting better, although the eye is still gross looking.
I got upset the last ophthalmologist appointment she had.   It was over 250 and he did stupid tests on her, in my opinion.  He put a yellow drop in her eye...  35 bucks....   then he stuck a strip looked like a diabetes blood strip in her other eye, to check her tears  and another 35 bucks... it was all stupid to me and just to run up the bill.  Now I am not wanting to go back, although she needs to see him!  We are living off of my husbands SS alone.. nothing on the side, no pension or anything.. man they act like you are made of money!
Sorry for the rant.   He wants to see her every 2 weeks and who can afford that!  Makes you feel like a bad mommy!   :dunno:

Well I'm just reading this post and good to hear that you think your Mia is getting better. Yikes, I guess Pet "Specialist" are expensive and human ones. You are probably the one to best judge how she is doing. I'm a little leery of Drs. always wanting to run 'test'. You're not really sure if they are serious or just taking advantage of you. Probably just best to watch her closely and judge for yourself. Hope all is well soon.
