Adopting a stray kitten
« on: October 06, 2016, 10:26:18 AM »
My husband and I just helped a friend rescue a mother cat and her five kittens about two months ago. A neighbor of theirs moved and left them behind so they took up residency in their garage. We managed to adopt all of them out except for the mother and two kittens. A rescue shelter ended up taking them instead. The kitten that we took home is a Russian Blue Mix with yellow eyes. His fur is silvery gray and he has stripes on his tail. He is the sweetest thing ever, except for when it comes to my husband. He is very afraid of him and runs every time he enters the room. I've heard that this is common with Russian Blues. Does anyone know what I can do to get him to like my husband more?

That was  very nice of your neighbor to take the mama and her babies in and find homes for most of them. Sounds like a beautiful kitten you have, got a pic you can share?

As to your husband, who feeds the kitten most of the time? If it is you then let your hubby feed him AND have 'play' time with him. He should start warming up to him after a while because he will associate food and fun with him. It's worth a try. Good luck!

It always breaks my heart and makes me so mad to know that people just move away and leave their pets to fend for themselves. I am so glad they were rescued and that you got to keep one of the babies. I do not know a lot about Russian Blues, but if you let your hubby be the only one to feed and give the kitten lots of attention for a few days, he should come around. Once he does, go back to both of you caring for him equally and he should be a very happy little furbaby.

Our last rescue kitty was the same way around my husband.  I think she must have been abused by a male somewhere along the line.  He started giving her treats and she came around slowly.  Now she's "his" kitty and loves him dearly.  Sometimes it just takes time.
